Five Types of Chemicals Used in WasteWater Treatment

Chemical use is often implemented in wastewater treatment plants. Wastewater treatment plant itself is a process of removing waste and dirt. The chemicals used in wastewater treatment also functions as a system to offer soluble and environmentally result of industrial waste. The contaminants in the sewage are removed and successfully produced safer wastewater for the environment.

Chemicals used in water treatment and distribution reach drinking-water by the most direct route. These chemicals are often fall into three broad categories:

  1. Substances caused from the addition of chemicals used in the treatment process for coagulation and disinfection. These chemicals are purposely added and can give rise to residues or by-products
  2. Disinfectants that are added with the purpose of maintaining a residual in distribution, usually to the tap. These chemicals give rise to by-products
  3. Substances that drain from materials used in distribution or plumbing, or that arise from the corrosion products of pipes.

There are many types of chemicals found in treating wastewater, each with different properties and uses. Here are five common types of chemicals found and used in treating wastewater: –

 

1. Aluminum Sulfate

  • The first chemical used in wastewater treatment plants is aluminum sulfate. 
  • Aluminum sulfate is used in wastewater plants and acts as purifier of the wastewater. 
  • The chemical itself is soluble and reacts to the chemicals in wastewater easily. 
  • As a result, it produces protein antigens that break insoluble and hazardous chemicals.
  • Aluminium sulfate helps to regulate the ph level of the chemical, which makes the wastewater less dangerous to the environment. 
  • The excessive use of aluminium sulfate can backfire despite the good functions.
  • It will be a threat to the environment when the level of aluminum sulfate is above the recommended level. 
  • However, it is one of the most critical elements in water purification

 

2. Sodium Aluminate

  • Sodium aluminate is a chemical that belongs to an inorganic compound. 
  • The liquid form of sodium aluminate works well as a phosphorus remover. 
  • Wastewater usually contains phosphorus, which is a kind of phosphoric calcium able to create a hard substance in the environment.
  • To prevent such a thing to happen, sodium aluminate functions to remove phosphorus and elevate the ph level of wastewater with extremely low ph. 
  • However, sodium aluminate is inorganic insoluble chemical and it is only soluble with some chemicals. 
  • Therefore, one has to be careful to only use it in the right dosage to prevent misuse and damage to the environment..

 

3. Polymer

  • Polymer is a commonly used chemical that has many functions in industry, especially for plastic manufacturing industries. 
  • Polymer is also beneficial in wastewater treatment plants. 
  • The function of polymer is to coagulate any solids dirts and work in diluted water in order to free these materials from suspension.
  • By implementing polymer, any waste that has the potential to block the water environment and more will have better treatment and the wastewater is cleaner than before.

 

4. Sodium Hydroxide

  • Another chemical that functions as a substance used in wastewater treatment plants is sodium hydroxide. 
  • Sodium hydroxide belongs to an inorganic compound with the symbol NaOH. 
  • In wastewater treatment plants, sodium hydroxide has similar functions like ph stabilizer, metal precipitant and alkaline cleaner.
  • The mixture of sodium, hydrogen,and dioxide makes this chemical work well for wastewater treatment especially for the critical waste and potentially pollutant one. 
  • The use of sodium hydroxide can ensure a more free wastewater and safer waste.

 

5. Hydrochloric Acid

  • While some chemicals work to elevate ph level, there are also chemicals to lower the ph levels. One of them is hydrochloric acid
  • While the chemical has many uses in industry, it is also used in wastewater treatment. 
  • Hydrochloric acid’s primary function is to lower the ph of the wastewater.
  • Since wastewater often includes a lot of waste of industrial chemicals, the ph tends to be at an extreme level either higher or lower than normal. 
  • If the ph level is higher, people use hydrochloric acid as one of the compounds to lower the ph in water. 
  • By using this chemical, the ph of the water will be more tolerable when the company has to pour the wastewater in nature.
